The Turkish Biochemical Society
A little history
Established in 1975 in Ankara, the Turkish Biochemical Society (TBS) is the Turkish home of basic and clinical biochemistry. We unite researchers across diverse fields such as biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology, molecular medicine, and bioinformatics under one visionary umbrella. Our mission is to foster a vibrant community where ideas flourish, knowledge expands, and the frontiers of science and medicine are continuously pushed forward.
Prestigious memberships
Since 1978, TBS has proudly represented Türkiye in the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS). Our Society is also a distinguished member of several other prestigious international organizations, including:
- International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) since 1978
- International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) since 1997
- European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) since 1997
- World Association of Societies of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (WASPaLM) since 2013
Our reach
With over 2,500 members and branches in Istanbul, Izmir and Adana, TBS is a leading scientific Society in Türkiye. As an international nonprofit scientific and educational organization, TBS holds a unique position in the global scientific community.
Our mission
To advance the science and education of biochemistry and molecular life sciences alongside clinical biochemistry. By deepening our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of life, we aim to enhance applications in clinical laboratories, ultimately leading to better healthcare outcomes.
Our vision and goals
- Advance Science and Education: We are dedicated to promoting scientific and clinical education and research in biochemistry, benefiting society at large.
- Support Professional Development: We champion high-quality scientists and doctors, fostering their professional growth to drive advancements in science and medicine.
- Amplify the Voice of Biochemistry: We strive to elevate the profile of biochemistry in Türkiye, ensuring that our community is heard and respected.
- Global Collaboration: We are committed to promoting and supporting the global biochemical community through robust collaboration.
National and international conferences
TBS has organized over 30 national and international scientific congresses, consistently attracting more than 500 participants. National congresses are organized annually and invite prominent international speakers to cover molecular basis of various diseases, translational medicine, biostatistics, methodology validation, molecular biology techniques, medical laboratory applications, standardization and accreditation, information technologies, data mining, laboratory management, evidence-based laboratory medicine, and advanced laboratory techniques (electrophoresis, chromatography, mass spectrometry, flow cytometry). These topics are also covered in various other scientific meetings and courses.
Educational initiatives
TBS is committed to advancing biochemistry and molecular life sciences education for both bachelor and postgraduate degrees. We organize educational meetings and workshops in collaboration with FEBS and IUBMB, providing essential learning opportunities for the scientific community.
Publications
Since 1976, TBS has published the "Turkish Journal of Biochemistry," a prestigious journal featuring original research and reviews in biochemistry and related fields. Indexed in leading databases such as SCI Expanded, Journal Citation Reports, Chemical Abstracts, Directory of Open Access Journals, Index Copernicus, EMBASE, Scopus, and ULAKBIM Turkish Medical Index, the journal is accessible online with open access, ensuring wide dissemination of knowledge.
Support for young scientists
TBS is passionate about nurturing the next generation of scientists. We offer around 100 scholarships annually to support young researchers, including graduate and postdoctoral scientists, encouraging them to present their work at conferences. Additionally, we recognize excellence by awarding the best oral and poster presentations at our national congresses. TBS also provides many theoretical and/or practical training courses and workshops every year to young scientists under the FEBS Academy program.
Organizational excellence
TBS successfully hosted the FEBS 2002 and FEBS 2006 Congresses. Another testament to our organizational expertise, TBS hosted the IFCC WorldLab in Istanbul in 2014, a landmark event that attracted all major clinical biochemistry and laboratory medicine federations. The congress set a record with 1,619 abstract submissions, showcasing our ability to facilitate significant scientific discourse.
TBS proudly invites you to join us in Istanbul for the FEBS 2025 Congress!
Experience the dynamic and innovative spirit of the TBS firsthand as we continue to drive scientific excellence and collaboration on the global stage.
